Hydroponic Gardening

Hydroponics, from the Greek words hydro, water, and ponos, labor, is an easy method of growing fresh herbs, flowers, vegetables, and fruits using mineral nutrient solutions, in water, without soil. Terrestrial plants may be grown with their roots in the mineral nutrient solution only or in a soilless medium, such as perlite, gravel, rock wool, or coconut coir.

Researchers discovered in the 19th century that plants absorb essential mineral nutrients as inorganic ions in water. In natural conditions soil acts as a mineral nutrient reservoir, but the soil itself is not essential to plant growth. When the mineral nutrients in the soil dissolve in water, plant roots are able to absorb them. When the required mineral nutrients are introduced into a plant’s water supply artificially, soil is no longer required for the plant to thrive. Almost any terrestrial plant will grow in a hydroponic system and there are many benefits to using one. Some of the benefits of a hydro system are that no soil is needed, the water stays in the system and can be reused, one can control the nutrition levels given to the plants, pests and diseases are easier to get rid of than in soil because of the container’s mobility, and more stable and higher yields. Even better, you can bring your hydroponic garden inside and grow all year long. Indoors, a gardener may maximize results for a hydroponic system by creating an environment optimal for plant growth. Having the right combination of nutrients, water, light, temperature, CO2, oxygen, and pH is essential to plant growth. Whether you are a professional hydroponics gardener, an indoor gardening hobbyist, or just beginning, Roots and Rocks offers thousands of hydroponic supplies to help you grow bigger, better and more productive plants.
